1440 miles in and well, two conclusions can be made. The most obvious is that my mom doesn’t know how to drive the Insight to its greatest extent. The second conclusion is that the EPA estimates are generous. I can and  have hit the EPA estimates but it requires very liberal use of that regen braking levels

I’d be willing to bet that most people know to be light on the throttle but don’t coast effectively or think of coasting/regen  braking as helping range/mpg. Seeing drivers in my area they will crawl off the line but slam the brakes at the last minute when stopping.

How hard does the regen kick in? That’s one of my favorite things about the i3, hardly ever using the brake pedal.

I’d love to take one for a spin sometime. It’s been too many years since I drove a Honda. I see a few around on my morning commute, and always think of Hondas as the cars of the future.

I’ve noticed most modern vehicles struggle to meet EPA numbers when driven normally.

Meanwhile I tend to blow EPA numbers out of the water on my older vehicles .

I think it’s a matter of manufacturers tend to game the EPA tests more now.

What were ambient temperatures like?

In my experience, cold weather can severely hurt hybrid efficiency, as the engine has to run more to generate coolant temperature for cabin heating, and a cold Li-ion battery can’t charge safely . (An extremely cold Li-ion battery has trouble discharging, too, something I ran into once this winter on my Prius, at about -19 C/-2 F, after it had a chance to cold-soak. Finding out that I only had about 45 hp instead of the 100+ hp I was expecting (between a chilled battery and some engine RPM limitation I was getting) , for a freeway merge, was not fun...)
